The Chief Advisor of the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has urged the Foreign Minister of Gambia, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, to take measures to stop the influx of new Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh by crossing the border.
This appeal was made when Dr. Mamadou Tangara met with the Chief Advisor at the State Guesthouse Jamuna in the capital on Wednesday (March 12). Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, shared this information.
According to Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, the Gambia's Foreign Minister briefed the Chief Advisor about the progress of the case against Myanmar regarding genocide. He stated that Gambia has filed the case to ensure justice for the Rohingya Muslim community and is working hard to successfully complete the process.
The Gambia’s Foreign Minister assured, "I can assure you that the President and the people of Gambia are committed to this cause. The President of Gambia is playing a fully supportive role in this matter and wishes to bring this issue forward."
Professor Muhammad Yunus praised Gambia's unwavering commitment and efforts regarding the case and emphasized that Bangladesh supports the successful conclusion of the case. "We want the case to be successful. We seek your support, and it will be a great help to us."
Professor Yunus also highlighted Bangladesh's efforts to collect humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya and called for stopping the arrival of new refug ees crossing the border into Bangladesh. He urged further deepening of trade and cooperation between the two countries.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction about signing an agreement to work jointly in the United Nations peacekeeping operations. They also discussed the potential of microfinance for poverty eradication and establishing peace and stability in conflict-prone regions of Africa.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Advisor’s senior representative, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and the Bangladesh government's SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) focal point and senior secretary, Lamia Morshed.
